Austrian Autobahn Guide

Key Motorway Corridors

Austria’s motorway network radiates out from Vienna like spokes on a wheel. The A1 West Autobahn steers you past Melk Abbey toward Salzburg, the A2 Süd Autobahn crosses vineyards into Styria and Carinthia, the alpine A10 Tauern Autobahn connects Salzburg to the ski haven of Kärnten, and the A12 Inntal Autobahn escorts drivers along the River Inn to Tyrol’s mountain resorts and on toward Germany. Each route is meticulously maintained, offering frequent rest stops and crystal-clear signage—ideal for first-time visitors.

Notable Tunnels & Mountain Passes

Austria punches through its dramatic peaks with world-class tunnels. The 10.5 km Tauern Tunnel carries more than 18 million cars yearly and levies a section toll; keep right for slower traffic inside. Katschberg, Arlberg, Bosruck and Gleinalm offer similar shortcuts—each clearly signposted with current fees. Remember to remove sunglasses and switch to dipped headlights before entry. Outside winter months, consider scenic pass roads like the Grossglockner High Alpine Road for unforgettable panoramas.

Motorway Services & Rest Areas

Service areas (Raststation) appear roughly every 40 km and combine fuel, food, child-friendly play zones and spotless restrooms. Electric-vehicle drivers will find 150 kW chargers at OMV and Ionity stations—payment via RFID or contactless card. Tip: In high season, pull into smaller Rastplatz lay-bys for a picnic with a view and skip the queues.
